This locally-developed program is a multi-workshop series
designed for girls ages 6-18 that teaches participants
a variety of life skills they then use while presenting
awards to women at Girls Incorporated of the Island
City’s Women Who Dare benefit. Through role-playing,
practice, and participation in public events, girls
build skills in:
- Researching information on the Internet
- Conducting interviews and being interviewed
- Writing scripts
- Making presentations and public introductions
- Building Consensus
- Conversing with both peers and adults
In 2002, Girls Inc. of the Island City won an award
for Best Foot Forward in the “Outstanding Program
in Self-Reliance and Life Skills” category at the
Girls Inc. National Conference in Washington D.C.
Since it’s inception in 2000, girls in this program
have met, interviewed, and introduced women such as:
broadcast journalist Dana King, Co-Anchor for CBS
Channel 5 News; Tara Van Derveer, basketball coach
for the Stanford Women’s Basketball Team and the U.S.
Women’s 1996 Olympic Gold Winning Basketball Team;
broadcast journalist Belva Davis; radio personality
Renel Brooks-Moon; and Captain Dawn Riley, the first
women in the world to lead an America’s Cup challenge.
